Fire Safety Log

Legal Requirements Overview

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, you must:

Fire Safety Log

You can find the Fire Safety Log by going to the Tools tab, scrolling down to "Compliance Logs", tapping "Compliance Logs", and then tapping "Fire Safety Log".

The Fire Safety Log has two actions:

• Log Fire Drill — record a completed evacuation practice
• Log Smoke Alarm — record a smoke alarm check

Smoke Alarm Checks (Monthly)

What to check:

• Press the test button on each alarm
• Listen for a loud, continuous beep
• Check the battery indicator light
• Replace batteries if the alarm is chirping

Recording in KinderStart:

1. Open the Fire Safety Log (Tools tab → Compliance Logs → Fire Safety Log)
2. Tap "Log Smoke Alarm"
3. Select the result:
   • ✅ All alarms working
   • ⚠️ One alarm not responding (add notes)
   • 🔴 Multiple alarms failed
   • 🔋 Battery Replaced
4. Add notes if needed (e.g., "Kitchen alarm battery replaced")
5. Tap "Save Record"

Frequency: Monthly (1st of each month recommended)

Legal requirement: Smoke alarms on every floor where childcare takes place

Fire Drill Procedures

Planning Your Fire Drill

Frequency: At least every 3 months (quarterly)

Best times:

• Morning session: After breakfast, before activity time
• Afternoon session: After nap time
• Ensure all children present (not during pick-ups/drop-offs)

Preparation:

• Decide which escape route to practice
• Brief any assistants/helpers beforehand
• Ensure children are wearing shoes
• Have register/phone ready

Conducting the Drill

Step-by-Step:

1. Sound the alarm (or shout "Fire drill!")
2. Calmly announce: "Children, we're practicing our fire drill. Follow me to the door."
3. Lead children to nearest exit
4. Carry/guide babies and toddlers (use buggy if multiple under-2s)
5. Close doors behind you (contain fire/smoke)
6. Walk to assembly point (e.g., front garden, neighbor's driveway)
7. Count children - do headcount with register
8. Time the drill - from alarm to assembly point

Never:

• ❌ Stop to collect belongings
• ❌ Go back inside for forgotten items
• ❌ Use the drill to tidy up first
• ❌ Let children think it's a game (keep serious tone)

Recording the Fire Drill

After completing the drill:

1. Return inside safely
2. Open KinderStart → Tools tab → Compliance Logs → Fire Safety Log
3. Tap "Log Fire Drill"
4. Fill in the form:
   • Date & Time: Auto-filled
   • Drill Duration: Enter time (e.g., "2 minutes 15 seconds")
   • Children Present: Select each child who took part
   • Notes: Add context (e.g., "Toddler hesitant at first but followed with encouragement")
5. Tap "Save Record"

What happens:

• Drill logged with timestamp
• Next drill due date calculated (3 months)
• Reminder scheduled
• Compliance score updated

Understanding Fire Risk Assessment

Required by law: You must have a written fire risk assessment for your childminding business.

What it includes:

• Identify fire hazards (candles, electrical equipment, flammable materials)
• Identify people at risk (young children, babies, yourself)
• Evaluate and reduce risks
• Record findings
• Review annually
