Plan nutritious weekly menus, publish them directly to parents, and eliminate repetitive typing with automatic meal pre-population and built-in allergen conflict checks in your daily care logs.

1. Plan Your Setting's Menu in Seconds

Never wonder what you planned for lunch or scramble to type out ingredients during a busy day.

  1. Open the Hub (Tools) and tap Menu Planner under Setting Operations.
  2. Select any day (Monday through Friday) and meal slot:
    • Breakfast
    • Morning Snack
    • Lunch
    • Afternoon Snack
    • Tea
  3. Choose a recipe from your Meal Library or type a custom meal name.
  4. If setting children have registered allergies matching ingredients in the meal, a clear warning badge alerts you immediately during planning.

💡Recipe Templates

Ingredient-Level Allergen Mapping. When you assign recipes from your Meal Library, KinderStart tracks all 14 statutory Food Standards Agency (FSA) allergens automatically.

2. Publish Your Menu to the Parent Portal

Keep families informed and build trust around nutrition and food safety.

  1. At the top of your Menu Planner, tap Publish to Parents.
  2. Once toggled, parents can view "This Week's Menu" on their home feed or through the menu drawer.
  3. The parent view displays daily meal items alongside transparent allergen tags (e.g., Contains: Gluten, Dairy).
  4. If your plan changes, unpublishing or making edits updates the parent view instantly.

3. Automatic Pre-Population in Daily Care Logs

When logging meals during the day, KinderStart does the typing for you.

  1. Tap the "+" (Plus) quick-action button > Log Meal, or open a child's Daily Diary.
  2. Select your meal slot (e.g. Lunch).
  3. KinderStart automatically pre-fills the meal description from today's planned menu!
  4. A subtle badge confirms: ✨ Pre-filled from menu: [Meal] (Tap to clear).
  5. Need to log something different? Tap the badge to clear or simply edit the text.

4. Real-Time Allergen Safeguarding Warnings

Children's health and safety is paramount.

  • When a meal is selected or pre-filled, KinderStart cross-references the meal's ingredients against each attending child's documented medical allergies.
  • If a conflict is detected, an amber warning banner highlights the affected child and matching allergen: ⚠️ Allergen Warning: Emma has an allergy matching this meal (Dairy)
  • Non-blocking by design: Childminders retain full professional autonomy to accommodate substitutes (e.g. oat milk for cow's milk) without getting blocked from logging care.

One-Handed Care Logging

Quick and Compliant. Pre-populating planned meals saves you minutes per child per day, while ensuring statutory dietary records are accurate, contemporaneous, and accessible for inspections.

5. Building Your Meal Library

Your Meal Library is where every recipe in the "Choose a recipe from your Meal Library" step actually comes from — and it's just as quick to build as it is to use.

  1. From the Menu Planner, tap the book icon in the header, or tap Browse Meal Library.
  2. In the Meal Library, tap + to start a new template, or tap an existing meal's card to view or edit it. Search and category tabs (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, Dessert) help you find one quickly, and you can sort by A–Z, Popular, or Recent.
  3. Fill in the template:
    • A dish photo — shown to parents on the published menu.
    • Meal Name and Category.
    • Approx. Cost per Portion — an estimated cost per child, used to build your weekly food budget preview (see the Shopping List below).
    • Ingredients — add as many rows as you need, and tag each ingredient's allergens individually.
    • Step-by-step instructions — cooking method and any early years safety tips (e.g. cutting grapes lengthways).
  4. Tap Create Template (or Update Template when editing) to save it into your library.

💡Let KinderAssist do the typing

Type just the meal name (e.g. "Mild Chicken Curry") and tap Auto-fill Ingredients & Steps next to the name field. KinderAssist suggests ingredients, quantities, allergen tags, and age-appropriate prep instructions for you to check and adjust — it doesn't publish anything until you save.

You don't have to build recipes ahead of time, either. Tap any day and meal slot in the Menu Planner and you get three ways to fill it:

  • Existing Meal — search and pick straight from your Meal Library.
  • New Recipe — build a one-off custom meal on the spot. Save to Library is switched on by default, so it becomes a reusable template automatically — turn it off if you only want it for this one occasion.
  • Import URL — paste a link to a recipe from the web and tap Fetch Recipe. This works with any site that publishes structured recipe data for search engines, which covers most major recipe sites; if a page isn't supported, you'll get a clear message and can add the recipe manually instead.

6. Community Recipes

Browse and reuse recipes other childminders using KinderStart have chosen to share — a shortcut past the blank page on busy weeks.

  1. From the Meal Library, tap the people icon in the header to open Community Recipes.
  2. Search, or filter by category tab (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, Morning Snack, Afternoon Snack, Dessert).
  3. Tap Filters for more precise browsing: Free From (Dairy, Gluten, Nuts, Eggs), Budget (under £1.00, £1.50, or £2.00 per portion), and Sort by Trending or Newest. Browsing within a single category always sorts newest-first.
  4. Tap the heart on any card to like it, or tap the card to open its full detail — ingredients, steps, and how many times it's been saved and liked by other childminders.
  5. Tap Save to My Library to copy a recipe straight into your own Meal Library as a normal, editable template.

💡Sharing one of your own

To share a recipe you've written, open it in the Meal Template editor and toggle Share with Early Years Community. You can add an optional Public Description for other childminders to read — your own preparation steps and private notes are never shared, only what you write in that field.

7. The Shopping List

Once a week's menu is planned, KinderStart already knows every ingredient it needs — the Shopping List just puts it in front of you.

  1. From the Menu Planner, tap Shopping List to see everything needed for that week, grouped by category (Dairy, Produce, Meat, Pantry, Other).
  2. If any of that week's meals have an Approx. Cost per Portion set, a budget banner at the top shows your estimated spend — the portion cost of each planned meal multiplied by how many children are attending that day.
  3. Switch between To Buy, In Cupboard, and All Items to control what's shown. Tap + Cupboard on anything you already have in stock — it moves out of your shopping trip without deleting it from the list, and moves back if you tap it again.
  4. Tick items off as you shop; a progress bar and Select All / Reset All track how far through the list you are. Where an ingredient is used in more than one meal, the item shows which meals and days it's needed for.
  5. Tap the share icon (or Export / Share List at the bottom) to send a formatted list — split into items to buy and items already in your cupboard — through your device's share sheet: text message, email, notes app, or anywhere else.

💡Saved on this device

Ticked and cupboard items are remembered locally on the device you're using, per week — they won't appear checked off if you open the same week's list on another device.
