If you are asking these questions, you aren't alone. The path to becoming a childminder is infamous for being confusing. The official guidance says it takes up to 12 weeks to process an application—but that clock only starts ticking after you’ve done the heavy lifting.

Learning how long to become a childminder is the first step in planning your new career. If you do things in the wrong order (like applying before your DBS is back), you could face months of frustrating delays. Phase 1: The "Pre-Work" (Weeks 1–4)

Crucial Rule: Do not submit your ofsted application wait time sensitive documents yet. You must have your background checks in hand first.

• Step 1: The DBS Check (Week 1): Apply for an enhanced DBS check childminder for yourself and anyone over 16 living in your home. This is the #1 cause of registration delays. You must use the specific Ofsted-approved route (Capita).
• Step 2: The GP Health Declaration (Week 2): Download the Health Declaration booklet and take it to your GP. They need to sign it to verify you are physically and mentally suitable. Chase this up twice a week—GPs are notoriously busy!
• Step 3: Mandatory Training (Weeks 1–4): While waiting for your documents, complete your Paediatric First Aid course and your Local Authority approved training. You must have these certificates in hand before the inspector visits.

Phase 2: The Application (Week 5)

Once your DBS certificate arrives and you have your health form, you are ready to hit the "Go" button on the become a childminder process.

• Step 4: Apply Online: Create a Government Gateway account and submit your application to the Early Years Register.
• Step 5: Pay the Fee: The fee is currently £35 for the Early Years Register. Once paid, the 12-week countdown officially begins.

You’ve applied. Now, Ofsted takes over the logistics.

• Step 6: Suitability Checks: Ofsted will run background checks with social services and other agencies. You don’t need to do anything here—just wait.
• Step 7: The Phone Call: Ofsted will usually call you to check your details and ensure your application is complete. Keep your phone on and your documents nearby!
• Step 8: Preparing for the Visit: This is your "revision period." Use this time to prepare your home (safety gates, fire blankets) and practice your answers for the suitability interview.

Phase 4: The Finish Line (Week 12+)

• Step 9: The Registration Visit: An inspector will visit your home around 8 weeks after your application is accepted. They will check your ID, your home safety, and quiz you on the EYFS rules.
• Step 10: The Certificate: If you pass, you will receive your Registration Certificate. Congratulations! You are now a legal childminder.
