About this activity pack

This free pack is for childminders in Wales caring for babies and toddlers from birth to 3. It gives you five calm, safe ways to mark Bonfire Night with no sparklers and no flames. You can use it alongside your Curriculum for Wales planning.

The activities mix art, sounds, talk and feelings. Children make firework pictures with chalk and a salad spinner, sort safe and not safe cards, play with loud and quiet sounds, and talk about bangs that feel scary. Every activity has words to try, a way to make it easier for babies, a way to make it harder for toddlers, and safety notes.

Most of what you need is already in your setting: chalk, paper, paint, a saucepan, a teddy. Each activity works on its own, so you can do one a day in the week around 5 November, or pick the ones that suit your group.

What's inside

  • Cover: Bonfire Night Activity Pack, five calm, safe things to do with babies and toddlers
  • Chalk fireworks: firework art with chunky chalk on dark sugar paper
  • Salad-spinner splats: spin paint into firework patterns
  • Safe or Not Safe?: a sorting game with a green tick tray and a red cross tray
  • Safe or Not Safe cards: eight cut-out picture cards, with answers for you
  • Loud and quiet: a sound game with a saucepan, a shaker, a cloth and a teddy
  • When fireworks feel scary: a feelings sheet with spaces to draw 'My face when it goes BANG', 'A pet or teddy who is scared' and 'What helps'

How to use it

  1. Print the pack and cut out the eight Safe or Not Safe cards before the children arrive.
  2. Choose one activity and gather the things listed under 'What you need'.
  3. Follow the 'What to do' steps, using the 'Talk about' questions and suggested words as you go.
  4. Use 'Make it easier' for babies and 'Make it harder' for older toddlers, so children of different ages can join in together.
  5. Read the safety notes first and stay with the children the whole time. Put the cards, chalk and tape away afterwards.
  6. Finish with the feelings sheet and a cosy den, which helps children who find the bangs frightening.
