About this tracker

Scotland has no milestone checklist for under 3s, and Realising the Ambition encourages noticing children's experiences rather than ticking off milestones. So this learning tree is about wellbeing: 48 everyday experiences across the eight SHANARRI indicators of Getting it right for every child.

There are six leaves for each indicator: Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included. Each one is something a baby or toddler experiences in your care, like settling with a familiar adult or having their cries and gestures answered.

The wording is our own, written from the SHANARRI indicators. Keep it with the child's personal plan and use the leaves still to colour as ideas for experiences to offer.

What's inside

  • The Wellbeing Learning Tree: 48 leaves across the eight SHANARRI wellbeing indicators
  • A second sheet listing every experience by indicator
  • A low-ink version of both pages for home printers

How to use it

  1. Print the poster and write the child's name at the top.
  2. Notice each experience in play, care routines and relationships. There is nothing to test.
  3. Colour the leaf when you see the child having that experience.
  4. Keep it with the child's personal plan and share it with their family.

Questions

Which framework is this based on?+

The eight SHANARRI wellbeing indicators from Getting it right for every child (Scottish Government). The experiences are KinderStart's own wording, as Scotland publishes no milestone statements for under 3s.

Is this a milestone checklist?+

No. Each item is an experience a child has in your care, not a skill to reach by a certain age, which fits Realising the Ambition and the Care Inspectorate's approach.

Can I use it for more than one child?+

Yes. Print one copy per child, as many as you need for your setting.

Can I print it at home?+

Yes. It is an A4 PDF, and a low-ink version with the same pages but no painted background comes with it.

I subscribe to KinderStart. Do I pay for this?+

No. Every printable is free in the KinderStart app for subscribers.
