About this tracker

The Learning Tree turns 40 Curriculum for Excellence Early Level experiences and outcomes into one painted poster for 4 and 5 year olds in their pre-school year. Each leaf is a short summary of an outcome, grouped on branches by the eight curriculum areas, with the full outcome and its code on the second page.

At 4 to 5, children are in their pre-school year before Primary 1, still at Early Level. This version picks Early Level outcomes that fit that year, such as sharing news and ideas, measuring with everyday things and knowing how to travel safely, ready for the move to school.

Colour a leaf when you notice it most of the time in the child’s everyday play and experiences. It is a warm way to share learning with families and to keep beside the child’s personal plan, and the leaves still to colour are ideas for next steps, not targets.

What's inside

  • The Learning Tree poster: 40 Early Level outcomes across the eight curriculum areas
  • A second sheet with each full experience and outcome and its code (for example LIT 0-01a)
  • A low-ink version of both pages for home printers

How to use it

  1. Print the poster and write the child's name at the top.
  2. Notice each outcome in everyday play, interactions and experiences, indoors and out.
  3. When the child does it most of the time, in different situations, colour the leaf and add the date if you like.
  4. Keep the tree with the child's personal plan and share it with their family.
