Childminder Assistant Ratios 2026: Calculating Your New Capacity

In 2026, the staff-to-child ratios for childminders remain strict but offer significant scaling potential when working with others, especially following the recent March 2026 government updates to floor space requirements.

1. The Core 1:6 Rule

The fundamental ratio for a childminder remains one adult for every six children under the age of 8. When you work with an assistant, this capacity is multiplied by the number of adults. With recent flexibilities, up to four people can now work together under a single childminder's registration.

However, these numbers are further restricted by strict age-specific limits:

• No more than three children per adult can be 'young children' (up until 1 September after their fifth birthday).
• No more than one child per adult can be under the age of 1.
• For two-year-olds, the statutory minimum staff-to-child ratio in England is 1:5.

2. Floor Space and the New 'Free-Flow' Rules

However, you must remember the golden rule: even when exceptions are permitted to the age sub-categories, the total number of children under the age of eight must never exceed six per adult in all circumstances.
