  4. Choose "Want to look around first? Try Demo Mode"

You're now exploring a fully-featured childminding business with enrolled children, completed observations, active contracts, and sample financial data.

The Four Pillars: Main Navigation Overview

1. Business Roadmap Tracker

What it is: Your personalised checklist for Ofsted registration

Who it's for: Aspiring childminders preparing to register with Ofsted

What you'll see in Demo Mode:

  • 4 Registration Phases tracking your journey from concept to inspection
  • Phase 1: Foundations & Legalities - Business structure, insurance, and initial training
  • Phase 2: Paperwork & Policies - Required policy documents and risk assessments
  • Phase 3: Home Preparation - Safety audits, equipment, and practice setup
  • Phase 4: Application & Inspection - Ofsted application submission and inspection preparation

Why it matters:

  • Never miss a critical deadline in the 12-week registration window
  • Track DBS checks, qualifications, and property consent in one place
  • Access policy templates and risk assessment frameworks
  • Prepare for your registration visit with confidence

Try it: Navigate between phases using the tab selector, expand tasks to see details, and mark items complete to see your progress update

2. Children Management

What it is: Your central database for all child profiles and family information

Who it's for: Active childminders managing enrolled children

What you'll see in Demo Mode:

  • Sample child profiles with names, ages, and key information
  • Quick access to individual child records
  • The "Add Child" button that starts the registration wizard

Why it matters:

  • Store comprehensive child information including medical needs, allergies, and emergency contacts
  • Manage parent contacts with direct communication channels
  • Link children to contracts, observations, and daily diary entries
  • Generate statutory reports and progress summaries

Core features:

  • Quick Profile - Add essential details in 30 seconds
  • Full Profile Wizard - Capture complete registration information in 4 structured steps
  • Family Linking - Connect siblings and manage multiple parent contacts
  • Document Storage - Upload birth certificates, medical forms, and consent documents

3. Tools Hub

What it is: Your operations command centre for daily tasks and business setup

Who it's for: All childminders, from registration through daily operations

What you'll see in Demo Mode:

Quick Actions Section:

  • Learning Journey - EYFS observation capture and progress tracking
  • Daily Diary - Attendance, meals, activities, and incident logging
  • Risk Assessments - Safety documentation for activities and outings
  • Weekly Planning - Activity planning linked to observations

Business & Settings Section:

  • Policy Documents - Pre-written templates for all required childcare policies
  • Business Setup - Configure your childminding identity, logo, and branding
  • Settings & Configuration - Term dates, opening hours, and operational preferences

Why it matters:

Your profile is the required first step — not optional. KinderStart pulls your business name, LA registration number, and invoice header directly from your profile. Set it up before anything else, or your invoices, contracts, and parent portal will show incomplete or incorrect details.

KinderStart applies your weekly home hours to calculate available session slots. It uses your term dates to exclude non-working weeks from invoice runs. Get these configured once — KinderStart handles the rest.

Try it: Scroll through the Tools Hub, tap "Learning Journey" to see sample observations, or explore "Policy Documents" to preview required templates

4. Finance Overview

What it is: Your complete financial management system for income and expenses

Who it's for: Active childminders managing payments and tax compliance

What you'll see in Demo Mode:

  • Financial dashboard showing income vs. expenses
  • Sample invoices and payment records
  • Expense tracking and mileage logging

Why it matters:

Every invoice you send through KinderStart is HMRC-compliant from day one. KinderStart calculates charges based on contracted hours — for example, 40 hrs × £7.50 = £300.00. It deducts funded hours before generating the parent charge. Log expenses and mileage as you go; KinderStart totals them for your self-assessment return.

Core features:

  • Smart Invoicing - KinderStart calculates charges based on contracted hours and attendance
  • Payment Tracking - Record cash, bank transfer, and childcare voucher payments
  • Funded Hours - KinderStart calculates 2-year-old and 30-hour funding entitlements
  • Making Tax Digital Ready - Export reports in HMRC-compatible formats

Key Features You'll Discover

Ofsted-Ready EYFS Framework

KinderStart uses the official EYFS framework for all observations and progress tracking:

  • Hierarchical tagging - Select Prime and Specific areas, then drill down to precise statements
  • Gap analysis heatmaps - Instantly see which EYFS areas need more attention
  • Progress summaries - Generate statutory reports for 2-year checks and transitions
  • Next steps linking - Observations feed into weekly planning

60-Second Daily Diary

Record a child's entire day in under a minute:

  • Quick attendance - Tap "Set Arrival Now" to log current time
  • Meal logger - Select meal type, describe food, and rate consumption
  • Activity tags - One-tap logging for common activities (outdoor play, story time, creative arts)
  • Photo evidence - Attach images to diary entries, shared with parents

Parent Portal & Communication

Parents access their own secure portal to:

  • View their child's daily diary in real-time
  • See observations and learning progress
  • Download invoices and contracts
  • Upload documents and forms
  • Receive push notifications for important updates

Manage permissions: Control which photos parents see and what information they access.

Compliance at Every Inspection

Your diary is your audit trail. Ofsted inspectors, LA queries, and invoice disputes all resolve faster when your diary is complete. KinderStart keeps you Ofsted-ready at all times:

  • Policy templates - Pre-written documents covering safeguarding, health & safety, equality & diversity
  • Risk assessments - Structured frameworks for premises, outings, and activities
  • Attendance registers - KinderStart generates these from daily diary entries
  • Staff/assistant tracking - Maintain ratios and training records
