About this tracker

The Learning Tree turns the 42 Development Matters statements for 3 and 4 year olds into one painted poster. Each leaf is a statement, grouped on branches by the seven areas of learning.

Between 3 and 4, children are in their pre-school years. The Development Matters statements for 3 and 4 year olds cover longer conversations and questions, playing and taking turns with others, more independence in dressing and self-care, counting and noticing shapes, and early mark-making.

Pin it up at child height and colour a leaf when a child shows it most of the time. Children love watching their tree fill up, and it gives you an easy, visual way to talk with parents about progress.

What's inside

  • The Learning Tree poster: 42 Development Matters statements across the seven areas of learning
  • A how-to-use sheet listing every statement by area

How to use it

  1. Print the poster on A4 or A3 and write the child's name at the top.
  2. Watch for each statement during everyday play. There is no need to set up tests.
  3. When the child does it most of the time, let them colour the leaf.
  4. Share the tree at parents' evenings or when the child moves on.
