About this tracker

The Milestone Rainbow puts Curriculum for Excellence Early Level experiences and outcomes for 3 and 4 year olds into the stripes of a painted rainbow, one colour for each curriculum area.

At 3 and 4, most children in Scotland are in funded early learning and childcare. Curriculum for Excellence Early Level starts in ELC and runs to the end of Primary 1, and this version picks Early Level outcomes that fit everyday play at this age, such as playing with rhymes and sounds, taking turns to talk and listen, and exploring the local area.

Children colour a stripe when they can do it most of the time. It is a bright, simple way to share learning with families and to keep alongside the child’s personal plan.

What's inside

  • The Milestone Rainbow: Early Level outcomes in eight colour-coded curriculum areas
  • A sheet with each full experience and outcome and its code
  • A low-ink version of both pages for home printers

How to use it

  1. Print the rainbow and write the child's name.
  2. Notice each stripe during everyday play.
  3. When the child does it most of the time, let them colour the stripe.
  4. Share the rainbow with families, and send it home as a keepsake when they move on.
