About this activity pack

This free pack is for childminders in Scotland caring for babies and toddlers from birth to 3. It gives you five calm, safe ways to mark Bonfire Night with no sparklers and no flames. It's written with Realising the Ambition in mind, so it fits the way you already plan for your youngest children.

The activities cover firework art with chalk and a salad spinner, sorting what is safe and what is for grown-ups only, playing with loud and quiet sounds, and talking about feeling scared of bangs. Each sheet lists what you need, words to try and questions to ask. It also has ways to make the activity easier for babies or harder for toddlers, plus clear safety notes.

Most of what you need is already in your home, such as chalk, paint, a saucepan and a teddy. You can do one activity a day in the week around 5 November, or pick one or two for a single session. The sheet about scary fireworks is useful on the nights the bangs start.

What's inside

  • Cover: Bonfire Night Activity Pack, birth to 3
  • Chalk fireworks: firework art on dark paper
  • Salad-spinner splats: spin-painted fireworks
  • Safe or Not Safe?: a sorting game for toddlers
  • Safe or Not Safe cards: 8 picture cards to cut out, with answers for you
  • Loud and quiet: a sound play basket
  • When fireworks feel scary: a drawing sheet about feelings, with spaces for my face when it goes bang, a scared pet or teddy, and what helps

How to use it

  1. Print the pack and read the safety note on each activity before you start.
  2. Gather what you need from the list on the sheet. Most of it is chalk, paper, paint, a pan and a teddy.
  3. Cut out the Safe or Not Safe cards ahead of time, and put them away after each game.
  4. Choose one activity and use the questions and words on the sheet to talk as you play.
  5. Use the easier and harder ideas to adjust the activity for each child, from babies on your lap to older toddlers.
  6. Finish the week with the scary fireworks sheet and a cosy blanket den, especially on nights with fireworks.
