About this activity pack

This free activity pack has printable rangoli mats that children fill with chalk, paint, crayons or sticker dots. It has four activities and a set of Rama and Sita story cards, written for childminders in Scotland using Realising the Ambition and Curriculum for Excellence Early Level.

It covers two age bands. For birth to 3 there are big, chunky mats with no loose materials, for big marks, colour words and tracing a path with a finger. For 3 to 4 the mats turn to symmetry and counting: finishing the other half of a rangoli and sticking the right number of dots on each petal.

Each activity fits on one page and gives you what you need, what to do, things to say, ways to make it easier or harder, and safety notes. That makes it easy to set out a short Diwali activity in the run-up to the festival, or to use the story cards at circle time with a mixed-age group.

What's inside

  • Cover: the four activities and the story cards at a glance, with the two age bands
  • Birth to 3: Big colour mat, one chunky mat for big marks and colour words
  • Birth to 3: Follow the swirl, a thick winding path to trace with a finger, then a crayon
  • 3 to 4: Match the other side, half a rangoli for children to finish so both sides match
  • 3 to 4: Count and stick, six numbered petals to fill with that many dots
  • Birth to 4: Rama and Sita story cards, four cards to cut out, each with a question to ask

How to use it

  1. Print the mats you need. For under-3s, tape the mat flat to the floor or a high chair tray so it cannot slide.
  2. Set out the materials from the page: chunky washable crayons or paint for younger children, and chalks, paints or sticker dots for 3 to 4 year olds.
  3. Sit beside the children and follow the steps on the mat, using the talk prompts to name colours, count dots or compare the two sides.
  4. Use the make it easier or make it harder ideas to suit each child.
  5. Cut out the Rama and Sita story cards and tell the story in your own words. With under-3s, use cards 1, 3 and 4.
  6. Follow the safety notes on each page: stay with younger children, and keep sticker dots away from under-3s.
